WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY 60 MINUTES AFTER DRINKING A CAN OF COKE.

Have you ever wondered what happens to your body after you drink a can of your favourite fizzy drink? We know! Well, more like specialists figured it out, and we’re happy to collect the information and share with you.

An infographic has revealed the reaction you go through for an hour after consuming, from the first sip, right through to 60 minutes after finishing. The graphic was compiled by The Renegade Pharmacist, a blog run by former UK pharmacist Niraj Naik and includes a seven-stop breakdown.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER DRINKING COKE?

If you’re drinking coke or any similar sugary caffeinated soft drink on a daily basis, here’s what happens:

10 MINUTES – AFTER DRINKING COKE SIDE EFFECTS

10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. Normally this much sugar will make you vomit, but coke contains phosphoric acid, which keeps you from throwing up.

20 MINUTES – AFTER DRINKING COKE SIDE EFFECTS

Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat, leading to weight gain.

40 MINUTES—AFTER DRINKING COKE SIDE EFFECTS

Caffeine is absorbed into the body at this time. Your pupils dilate and your blood pressure rises, as your liver continues to dump more sugar into your bloodstream.

45 MINUTES – AFTER DRINKING COKE SIDE EFFECTS

Your body increases your dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain. The effect is said to be similar to that of heroin, by the way.

But don’t worry too much about this, physical activity also increases dopamine production (along with a lot other healthy habits and foods). Increasing your dopamine secretion is not a bad thing, but the way you do it can be.

So if you really enjoy the pleasure you feel after drinking a can of coke, you should consider some exercises, or some healthier foods that increase dopamine production, such as avocado, banana, dark chocolate etc.

60 MINUTES—AFTER DRINKING COKE SIDE EFFECTS

Multiple reactions happen within the body after an hour of consumption. The phosphoric acid binds with calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine. This causes a frequent urination and leads to dehydration and thirst.

Is Coca Cola bad for your health?
According to Naik, the infographic is not only applicable to Coca-Cola, but to all caffeinated fizzy drinks. “Coke is not just high in high fructose corn syrup, but it is also packed with refined salts and caffeine,” writes Naik on his blog, The Renegade Pharmacist.

“However a small amount now and then won’t do any major harm,” he adds. “The key is moderation.”

In a press statement, a spokesperson for Coca-Cola says the beverage is “perfectly safe to drink and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet and lifestyle.”
