Ethiopia stands firm on its position of equitable use of the Nile waters, despite Egypt’s stubbornness in keeping its claims over historical rights, signed in 1959, but excluded source countries such as Ethiopia and Uganda.
A Spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs, Meles Alem, reaffirms his country’s policy over the Nile, during a press briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.
The issue of the Nile is “a life or death matter” for Ethiopians, Meles told the media, repeatedly.
“The government of Egypt is creating problems invoking the Egypt-Sudan agreement despite deals with Ethiopia and Sudan,” said Meles.
Egypt’s President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, used the exact same words “Matter of Life or Death” during his address while inaugurating the largest fish farm in the country in the Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate on November 17, 2017.
His speech was made while Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn was getting ready to fly to Cairo, to resume high-level talks over the Nile.
